How to Insert Earplugs Correctly

Properly fitted earplugs are the key to effective hearing protection—read our simple guide on how to use them correctly.

Silicone earplugs

Make sure you use SwedSafe earplugs correctly for maximum protection and comfort

1. Prepare the ear and the earplug

Make sure the skin around the opening of the ear canal is clean and dry. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the earplug. Then shape the silicone earplug into a soft “ball.”

2. Position and seal

Place the “ball” at the opening of the ear canal and gently flatten it so that it adheres to the skin around the entrance to the ear canal. This creates a seal that provides effective protection.

Important:

Do not push the earplug deep into the ear canal. If it is inserted too far, it may break and get stuck in your ear. It is also important not to break the earplug before use.

Preparation

Make sure your hands, outer ear, and the skin around the ear canal are clean and dry before handling the earplugs. Remove any cotton from around the earplug.

1. Soften and shape the plug

Warm the wax plug between your fingers until it becomes soft and easy to shape. Then roll it into a cone shape.

2. Insert the plug

Insert the earplug into the opening of the ear canal with the pointed end first. Then shape the outer part so that it fits snugly against the skin around the ear opening for optimal hearing protection and comfort.

Important:

Don’t insert the earplug too far into your ear canal. You should always be able to grasp it easily so you can remove it.

Insertion

1. Straighten the ear canal

Gently pull your ear upward to straighten the ear canal. This makes it easier to insert the earplug correctly and comfortably.

2. Insert the earplug

Gently twist and turn the earplug into your ear canal until it sits securely and comfortably.

3. Check the fit

When the earplug is properly inserted, the flanges should be positioned inside the ear canal, and surrounding sounds should sound muffled. If the fit doesn’t feel right or the sound reduction is insufficient, try a different size.

Important:

Don't insert the earbud any further than you can easily grasp and remove it.

Extraction

Remove the earplug slowly by gently pulling and twisting it out of the ear canal.
